Why is it that a blaster rifle has a base damage of 3d8 and can't melt through most matterial and doesn't ignore DR, but a lightsaber does all these things but only has a base damage of 2d8?

that's where we brought in the D&D 3.5 rules for an artifact weapon. As your character advances in levels in skills then the weapon improves in damage and abilities. this ONLY applies to lightsabers or similar skill weapons.
Sorry, blaster rifles just aren't skilled weapons... anyone can point and pull. you can use a feat for sniper shot or use that as a crit only occurence.

That is a pretty good rule, I think I'll use it. One Alternative I had was just to go back the the previous edition of the core rules and use their rules for the lightsaber damage. I also agree with you about the blaster, I was just pointing out how crapy the lightsaber rule was

Do you use vibroswords or just lightsabers?
